Elks host Thanksgiving dinner — It was certainly interesting to see the 115 children, who were guests at Houlton lodge of Elks, enjoy their annual Thanksgiving dinner at the Club House. The plates were stacked with good things, and after these had been disposed of, each guest was presented with a bag of candy.
Of local interest — The bowling alleys at the different club houses were well patronized on Thanksgiving Day. Miss Florence Downing and Miss Alena McLaughlin of Calais, have opened their candy factory over the Hatheway Drug store. On account of the rag shortage, prices of bond, ledger and other writing papers will continue to rise until rag collections in Europe can be resumed.

‘Blondie” to run weekly — The Pioneer Times announced that beginning next week the hilariously funny comic strip, “Blondie,” will become a regular weekly feature of this newspaper. It is said to be the most popular comic strip in the country today.

FETED BY LEGION — Post Commander Roy Hayes will act as toastmaster at the testimonial dinner at the Legion rooms when the Chester L. Briggs Post will pay tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Elson A. Hosford, better known as Bill, during a special program and the presentation of a life membership in the post.
Grange holds barnyard frolic — A barnyard frolic will be held at the Littleton grange hall Saturday evening, Dec. 2, for the benefit of the Better Home and Community Welfare fund. Music will be furnished by Scottie and his Revelers, hot dogs, doughnuts and coffee will be on sale. Admission to the hall is 15 cents.

Barton and Niles recognized for achievements — Stephen E. Barton of Houlton has been selected as the most outstanding DeMolay member in Maine and will receive the DeMolay council’s distinguished service medal. George B. Niles of Houlton has been awarded a $1,500 grant-in-aid from the Maine Public Service Co. to study at Northeastern University in Boston.
Hill Top Bowling lanes open — The new Hill Top Bowling Lanes on the Calais Rd. officially opened their lanes Thursday with a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Hill Top’s three owners, Dick Stewart, Eugene Stewart and Orville Boutilier.

Christmas events draw thousands — The holiday season got started this past weekend in Houlton with the Retail Trade Board’s pre-Christmas town-wide sale, a Santa Claus Parade, carol sing-along and tree lighting at Monument Park and a winter crafts festival. Police estimate 5,000 to 6,000 people visited the town on Saturday.
Cloth diapers in demand — Responding to frequent customer requests, Shop ‘n Save Supermarkets and Wellby Super Drug Stores, divisions of Hannaford Bros., are offering reusable cloth diapers in all stores.
