Katahdin teams fall in home openers

STACYVILLE, Maine — The Katahdin High School baseball and softball teams opened up the season on Monday in Stacyville against Stearns of Millinocket.


The Katahdin Cougars grabbed an early lead behind Devin McGraw’s two-run single. The game was played closely, with the teams tied at 5-all in the third. However, Stearns’ bats came alive and they scored five runs in the fourth; three in the fifth; and finished with 15 in the top of the sixth to defeat Katahdin, 28-5.
Zack Bouchard paced the Minutemen with six RBIs on four hits. He also earned the win on the mound, striking out 12 over six innings of work.
In softball action, the Katahdin girls did not fare any better against the visiting Minutemen, falling 22-2.
Jess Girsa of Stearns earned the complete-game win, allowing two hits, while striking out 10. She backed her own cause from the plate with a triple and a pair of singles. Cassidy McLeod punched out two doubles and two singles to drive in five runs, while Lauren Jamo doubled, singled and plated a run.
