Aroostook — One who has never seen the fields of Aroostook has no idea of the immensity of the proposition up there, and the beauty of the country. Fields that stretch miles away into the dimness of the distance, showing shades of green that are too many and too wonderful to reduce to numbers, please the eyes and charm the senses to such an extent that it is hard to realize that they mean not beauty but hard earned cash, or worse yet, destruction of hopes and actual want, if their burden does not find a market.
More bread and less meat — To beat the high cost of living and defer the visit of the grim reaper, to preserve the health and conserve the strength – eat more bread and less meat.

Blitzkrieg of ballots sweep Republicans into office — Selected for office were: Ralph O. Brewster, U.S. Senate; Frank Fellows, Congress; and Sumner Sewall, Governor.
Green tomatoes — “Poor man’s beefsteak” is a name for fried green tomatoes. Slice them and let them stand in salt water for an hour. Dip in egg and and then flour and fry slowly in hot fat. Brown each piece and make a gravy afterward to pour over the fried tomato slices.

Medicare — How many people in Aroostook County are currently eligible for the benefits that will be provided under the new medicare setup? According to the most recent tabulation based on the Department of Commerce figures, approximately one out of every 15 persons in the local area are now automatically covered for most of their future medical costs. They are the 7,108 men and women are are 65 years of age or older. The 6.7 percent of the Aroostook County population who are in the plus-65 bracket and thus entitled to medicare is relatively low. Elsewhere throughout the United States, the average is 9.2 percent.
