After a quiet month of competition in December, the action cranked up recently for the Carlisle swim team.

The squad, a co-op team with swimmers from Caribou, MSSM and Presque Isle, hosted Brewer Jan. 7, 2017 traveled to Hampden Jan. 14 and hosted Ellsworth Jan. 16. Prior to that stretch, the team had just two meets all season and had not competed since Dec. 17.

In the latest event, held at the Caroline Gentile pool on the University of Maine at Presque Isle campus, Carlisle competed against a strong Ellsworth squad which swept the team scores. The margin was 115-48 in the girls’ meet and 114-36 in the boys’ meet.

Maddie Wing won the 200 freestyle in 2:11.9 and the 500 freestyle in 5:57.46 for Carlisle’s lone individual girls’ victories. The 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Elizabeth Deschenes, Grace Kurtz, Riley McNeal and Abigail Raymond placed second in 2:18.6.

Leigh Buck gained the triumph in the 100 free in 56.45 seconds as the Carlisle boys’ only winner on the afternoon. Buck was also second in the 50 free in 25.1 seconds, while Nate Gere was the runner-up in the 200 free (2:02.01) and the 100 butterfly (59.27). The 200 medley relay team of Harrison Ma, Jay Philbrick, Gere and Buck registered a second-place performance in 2:02.4.

Carlisle was also swept at Hampden by much closer scores. The girls lost 90-71 and the boys were downed, 84-54. Wing won the 200 free and the 100 fly and joined Abby Espling, Kyra Thibeault and Kristyn Maley on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

For the boys, Buck took the 100 fly and the 50 free, while Gere prevailed in the 200 individual medley and the 500 free. The 200 medley relay team and the 400 free relay team, both consisting of Ma, Philbrick, Gere and Buck, also swam to victories in the boys’ meet.

Brewer swept the Jan. 7 meet held at the Limestone Community Pool. The Witches nipped the Carlisle girls, 82-76, while the Brewer boys were 62-20 winners.

Wing again clinched a double by taking the 200 and 500 freestyle events in convincing fashion. The other individual girls’ winner for Carlisle was Raymond in the 200 I.M. Espling, Maley, Wing and Thibeault made up the 200 medley relay team that came in first place.

Buck won both the 50 free and the 100 fly for Carlisle’s only two boys’ victories.

Carlisle is scheduled for another meet at Old Town Saturday, Jan. 21 beginning at 6 p.m.
