Shires, Warriors stay perfect in girls hoops

It is getting down to crunch time for girls basketball squads as the regular season rapidly winds to an end.

Houlton and Southern Aroostook remain undefeated on the season and should be poised to make lengthy playoff runs in Bangor this February.

Houlton (10-0) is the top-ranked squad in Class B North and will likely earn a first-round bye. If the Shires hold as the top seed, the team would play the winner of the No. 8-9 prelim game (currently MCI and Mt. Desert Island).

In Class D North, Southern Aroostook (9-0) is ranked second behind Shead (11-1). The Warriors, if they stay No. 2, would play the winner of the No. 7-10 prelim (currently East Grand and Katahdin).

East Grand (7-4) needs to make a big surge if it wants to avoid a preliminary game as only the top four teams get a bye in Class D North. Katahdin hosted East Grand last year in a prelim game and the tables could be turned this season with the Vikings likely hosting.

In Class C North, Hodgdon (3-10) has shown great improving winning more games this season than in the past three seasons combined. The Hawks are currently 15th in the region and would need to move up to No. 12 to secure a playoff spot.
