CARIBOU, Maine — Aroostook County’s top scholar-athletes earned recognition and 10 came away with $400 college scholarships at the eighth annual Aroostook League Scholar-Athlete Banquet held March 13 at Caribou High School.

The member schools of the Aroostook League sent one boy and one girl scholar-athlete to attend the banquet along with a faculty member — either an athletic administrator or coach.

The school’s representatives are as follows: Ashland: Lucas Craig and Gabby Wortman; Caribou: Bryce Coffin and Katelyn Clark; Central Aroostook: Clark Bradbury and Sarah Gerritsen; East Grand: Josh Jones and Hannah Crone; Easton: Elise Allen and Jake Flewelling; Fort Kent: David Roy and Lily Brickman; GHCA: Ethan Jacques and Jenna Carver; Hodgdon: Taylor Desrosiers and Daden Palmer; Houlton: Jacob Worthley and Hannah Foley; and Katahdin: Devin McGraw and Erin Robinson.

Also, Limestone: Sean Hale and Delaney Rossignol; MSSM: Garrett Barb and Allison Johnson; Madawaska: Gabby Cyr and Zachary Epstein; Presque Isle: Grace Player; Southern Aroostook: Nolan Altvater and Katelyn Stevens; Van Buren: Travis Lebel and Lindsey Gendreau; Washburn: Andrew Gumprecht and Rachel Driscoll; and Wisdom: Kimberly Blanchette and Nathan Chamberland.

Following the meal, a drawing was held to select 10 students — five boys and five girls — who received a financial award for their college education expenses at the start of the second semester of their freshman year. Girls’ recipients were Carver, Drew, Robinson, Driscoll and Blanchette, while boys’ recipients were Jones, Worthley, Epstein, Gumprecht and Chamberland.

The Aroostook League provides funds for the scholarships through proceeds from the senior all-star basketball game, member schools assessment, fees from PVC schools participating in the league’s alpine ski program and a surcharge from streaming coverage of high school basketball games.

The banquet speaker was Marc Weeks, a 1983 Caribou High School graduate and a retired U. S. Navy officer who is currently the Vikings’ golf, volleyball and JV girls basketball coach.
