Gauvin Scholar shares success tips with peers

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Wyatt Condon is the 2015 Bangor Daily News Gauvin Scholar and is a graduate of Ashland Community High School. He is currently attending the University of Maine at Fort Kent, where he is majoring in computer applications.

“The Gauvin Scholarship has been beneficial by showing me how great Aroostook County is,” said Condon. “Staying in Aroostook County is important to me because my friends and family live here.”

While Condon is dedicated to his studies, he also enjoys camping, hiking and working on computers in his spare time. Nearing the end of his second year of college, Condon has some advice for future Gauvin Scholars.

“Don’t expect college to be like high school. There is a lot more work and you can’t slack off,” said Condon. “Always study for tests. You can’t get away with not studying in college. Remember, not studying could cost you hundreds of dollars.”

Aroostook Aspirations Initiative’s Executive Director, Kristen Wells, says Condon has a lot to offer his classmates, with both personal and educational advice.

“He’s the tutor for all of our Gauvin Scholars on the UMFK campus, because he builds such great relationships with them and can give them great advice about how to study and learn,” said Wells. “He shares his experience in his classes and is very personable with the other Scholars. Students that are struggling can easily approach him and talk to him. He’s such a great listener and is eager to help anyone that needs it.”

Wells added that Condon has taken advantage of every scholarship opportunity to alleviate his expenses, and is graduating an entire year early.

Condon is also looking forward to an internship at MMG Insurance this summer.
