At the Central Aroostook Humane Society we are all about taking care of our charges with medical care and lots of tender loving care until we can find the forever home for our dogs and cats. The purpose of this article is to share some thoughts to consider before adopting a pet.
Before you bring that special animal home, it is so important that you think about the responsibilities and costs involved with owning a pet. There are food costs, medical costs, and possible kennel costs when you are away from home plus getting the animal those special toys, etc., which we all like to give to our animals. Yes, we spoil them, but that is part of the fun of having a pet.
Once you have decided you are ready to adopt from the shelter, take your time choosing a pet and find one whose personality fits with your family. The shelter staff is very knowledgeable about animals and will be more than glad to share their expertise with you. If you are interested in a particular dog you may want to take him for a walk and have a chat with him. Also, we have a room where you can take a cat or dog into and visit with it for a while to see how you each feel about each other.
It is important to remember animals, particularly dogs, who have been at the shelter take some time to settle down. Being in a cage is very difficult for some animals, and they need to readjust. It is so important to keep in mind you will be caring for this animal for its lifetime.
After you have selected the new family member, the following eight items are very important.
- Put a collar and ID tag on your pet, and register him at your town office (dogs only).
- Training your dog takes time and patience. A dog obedience class may be a great help.
- Spay/neuter your pet to prevent unwanted litters.
- Take your pet for regular check-ups and to treat illnesses
- Make sure your pet has plenty of fresh water, sufficient food and shelter from the elements.
- Groom your pet regularly (especially long-haired ones), but not too many baths.
- Make sure your pet has proper care if you go away.
- Most of all, love your pet. An animal gives so much and asks so little in return.
