115 Years Ago – Apr. 29, 1902
Warm weather — The thermometer registered 78 degrees in the shade at noon today. It’s been quite a contrast to the weather we have been having for a week or two previous.
Big business — Caribou’s hotels have been doing a big business during the last week or two. From Thursday morning of last week until Wednesday night of this week, over 400 guests were registered.
100 Years Ago – May 3, 1917
No value — The Fort Fairfield Review reports that a Missouri editor refuses to publish obituaries of people who do not take the paper. His view is that people who do not take their home paper are dead anyway, and their passing has no value.
75 Years Ago – Apr. 29, 1942
Speed limit — Henry P. Weaver, Chief Maine State Police has issued that on April 25th a proclamation was directed by Gov. Sumner Sewall setting a maximum speed limit of 40 miles per hour for vehicles operating on the highways of our state.
Robot Weatherman — The U.S. Weather Bureau Station located at the Caribou Municipal Airport will inaugurate the use of “robot weathermen” as a regular twice daily service beginning tonight, Thursday at 11:30. A radio transmitting instrument will be attached to the balloon twice daily and automatically send signals back to the Caribou weather station in its flight of altitudes from 12 to 14 miles.
50 Years Ago – May 3, 1967
Mud a problem — One of the problems facing the Caribou School Committee has been what to do about the mud, sometimes ankle deep in the new high school, a condition resulting because tarring of the school drives and parking lot could not be accomplished before the frost last fall. There are 560 students at the school, and that many feet can track a lot of mud. Committee member Ferris Freme questioned at the gathering whether funds appropriated at the annual Town Meeting might not be wasted if tar is applied to the drives in their present condition. He felt a suitable base was lacking.
Grass fires — Caribou firemen answered more than 20 calls for serious grass fires last week, the outbreaks hitting the countryside day and night. Above, a fire originating in grass off the Van Buren Road Sunday mushroomed into a brush blaze before being brought under control. Saturday, another fire’s flames lick dangerous close to the Hilltop Elementary School.
25 Years Ago – April 29, 1992
That’s a lot of pets — More than 350 people filled the Caribou Recreation Center on April 18 for the annual Kids Pet Show, sponsored by the Caribou Parks and Recreation Department. 45 dogs, 33 cats and 215 stuffed animals were also on hand as volunteer judges struggled with the task of choosing winners in over 27 categories. The Caribou VFW and VFW Auxiliary made donations to help provide a portion of the awards.
