Ashland kids defend teeth

Students in grades K-4 at Ashland District School recently participated in a poster contest to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month.

Sponsored by Aroostook County Action Program, the effort was led by Anne Chapman, ACAP’s oral health community education specialist.

There were three divisions: Kindergarten, first and second grade, and third and fourth grade. Alyssa Rafford won the Kindergarten contest, while Claire Bauzenberger won for grades 1-2 and Cole Eastman for grades 3-4.

Portage historical happenings

The Portage Lake Historical Society will meet Monday, May 22,,at 6:30 p.m. at the Portage Lake Town Hall conference room.

The Historical society will once again create a “mini-museum” in the Town Hall’s voting room featuring veterans. They are looking for anything veteran- or military-related that they can borrow for the display during the summer. Please include your name and contact information on any items you loan to ensure they are returned to you.

Keeping with honoring veterans, local quilters will create a veterans quilt which will include photos of the veterans. The society is asking for copies of the photos (not originals), 5-by-7 in size. Along with the photos, please include the name, rank, military branch and military conflict/war the veteran was in.

The quilt will be displayed throughout the summer at the mini-museum and thereafter will be a part of the permanent display at the Old Town Hall building (which the society is in the process of purchasing).
