Police arrest Limestone man for sexual crimes

LIMESTONE, Maine — On Monday, May 22, 2017 the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office arrested 50-year-old Timothy J. Burns, of Limestone.

A sheriff’s detective had previously requested an arrest warrant be issued on Burns as a result of a criminal investigation into allegations of sexually based misconduct, reported Aroostook County Sheriff Darrell Crandall via a press release. For more than a week, deputies and Limestone police actively sought Burns, who evaded their efforts to take him into custody.

On the advice of legal counsel, Burns surrendered to authorities at the Limestone police station early Monday morning. A sheriff’s detective immediately responded and took Burns into custody on the warrant.

Burns now faces the following felony criminal charges:  gross sexual assault-class A, to wit, engaging in a sexual act with another person under the age of 14 years of age, and Gross Sexual Assault-Class B, to wit, engaging in a sexual act with another person who suffers from a mental disability.

There are two alleged victims in this case, neither of whom will be identified, Crandall said.

Burns was taken to the Aroostook County Jail, where he remains. The court set bail at $10,000 cash (with no third party), and 24-hour house arrest, unless the court approves a 24-hour custodian.
