Monday baseball and softball summaries

The Ashland Hornet baseball and softball teams prevented the Washburn Beavers from picking up their first victories of the season Monday, May 22, in Ashland. The baseball score was 14-2, while the softball final was 15-2. 

In varsity sports action Tuesday, May 23, Caribou hosts Fort Kent in both baseball and softball at 3 p.m.; Washburn travels to Limestone to play LCS/MSSM in baseball and softball at 4 p.m.; and Houlton baseball/softball hosts Mattanawcook Academy at 4 p.m. in a makeup game.

The tennis regular season ends for both the Caribou Vikings and the Presque Isle Wildcats as the girls and boys teams square off at 3:30 p.m. at the UMPI courts.

Summaries of games and matches played Monday are as follows:

Softball

Southern Aroostook 25, Hodgdon 4 — At Hodgdon Monday, Kylie Vining hit two doubles, a single and a triple, while Makaelyn Porter homered, tripled and singled to lead the Warriors over Hodgdon in a battle of the top two teams in Class D North.

For Hodgdon, Sidney Crane and Kora Lambert both doubled.

Ashland 15, Washburn 2 — At Ashland, Shelby Stoltz hit a bases-clearing triple to lead Ashland (4-4) past Washburn (0-10) in a game shortened to five innings due to the 12-run rule. Willow Hall tripled and singled for the Hornets, who scored in all five innings, including five in the third. Samantha Churchill, Jacquilin West and Rachel Driscoll each singled for Washburn.

LCS/MSSM 5, Central Aroostook 2 — At Limestone, senior pitcher Delaney Rossignol allowed just two hits and struck out 11 as LCS/MSSM (7-3) defeated Central Aroostook of Mars Hill. Victoria Eichorn singled twice and knocked in a run for the Eagles while Taylor LaBreck notched an RBI single. Breann Bradbury homered and Maci Beal doubled for the Panthers (4-6).

Madawaska 11, Fort Fairfield 3 — At Fort Fairfield, Jenna Dugal collected four hits as Madawaska rolled to its sixth win against three losses and crept up to fourth place in the Class D North Heal Point standings. Dugal scattered five hits in earning the pitching win for the 11-3 Owls. Hunter St. Pierre paced 3-8 Fort Fairfield with two singles and two RBIs.

Baseball

Hodgdon 4, Southern Aroostook 3 — At Hodgdon Monday, the Hawks picked up a key victory over Southern Aroostook. Dillan Buzzell ripped an RBI-single in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Hawks past SA. Buzzell finished the game with two singles for Hodgdon, while Wyatt Foster singled and scored three runs.

Luis Morales paced the Warriors with a double and two singles.

Ashland 15, Washburn 2 — At Ashland, Kyle Beaulier knocked in three runs with a two-run home run in the first and an RBI single in the second as the Hornets eased to the victory. Steven Bellanceau played for the first time after suffering a broken leg prior to the season. He came out strong in his first appearance with a three-run home run in the third inning for Ashland (5-4). Carver Pendexter led the Beavers (0-8) with a two-run homer.

Fort Fairfield 11, Madawaska 0 — At Fort Fairfield, Ryan Player’s two-run home run led the Tigers past Madawaska. Jesse Helstrom singled in a run for the Tigers, the only undefeated team in the North region in all classes with their 11-0 mark. The Owls fell to 0-10.

Central Aroostook 10, LCS/MSSM 7 — In Limestone, the Panthers moved to 6-4 on the season by avenging the May 9 loss. The Eagles fell to 4-7. Individual highlights were not reported.

Caribou 14, John Bapst 12; John Bapst 11, Caribou 1 — The Vikings came from behind to win game one of the doubleheader played at Caribou High School, giving the hosts their second victory of the season. The Crusaders (4-9) dominated the second game over the Vikes (2-10) to salvage a split. Individual highlights were not reported.

Tennis

The Shiretowner tennis teams made the trip north for a make-up match against PI Monday, with the Houlton girls squeaking out a 3-2 victory for their third win of the season against seven losses. The Shires are now in fifth place in Class C, while the Wildcat girls, at 6-5, are in ninth in Class B.

The Wildcat boys are 7-4 in ‘B’ and in eighth place after their win, while the Shires are now 0-10.

Houlton girls 3, Presque Isle 2 — Singles: Sarah Morneault (PI) def Rebecca Mooers (H) 8-3; Sydney Lorom (H) def Miranda Bragan (PI) 8-3; Maddie Grant (H) def Hana Boucher (PI) 8-5; Doubles: Anna Robinson-Gaby Haley (PI) def Tessa McCormick-Nadja Messerschmidt (H) 8-2; Emily Miller-Carolyn Hannigan (H) by forfeit.

Presque Isle boys 4, Houlton 1 — Andre Daigle (PI) def Nolan Porter (H) 8-1. Jordan Bonville (PI) def Owen Gallup (H) 8-2, Mason Young (PI) def Devin Ivey (H) 8-1, Gage Young/Isaac Madore (PI) def Isaac Vega/Jaron Gentle (H) 8-3, Nate Delucca/Tim Youngfellow (H) def Austin Moreau/Brandon McKnight (PI) 8-2.
