Community service is an asset

To the Editor:

The Towns of Smyrna and Merrill are most appreciative of Sheriff Darrell Crandall and the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department for the implementation of the Aroostook County Jail Community Service Program.

After a discussion with Sheriff Crandall a couple of years ago regarding this program and what could be done through the program, I signed the towns of Merrill and Smyrna up for assistance.   We received some support last year and again this year in picking litter along our roadways.

This year, Sheriff Darrell Crandall sent an officer and two workers to our towns each day for almost three weeks; the assignment was to pick litter from along roadsides.   Over 2,000 pounds of refuse was handpicked from roadsides along US Route 2, Route 212 and the Town Line Road in Merrill.

While I am thoroughly disgusted that people litter and so much trash was discarded along our roadsides, I am truly grateful for this program that is a win-win situation for everyone.  The workers got to be outside and were very productive; the officers enjoyed being outside for the beautiful spring weather and our community looks so nice.  We have had many positive comments regarding this project.

The selectmen from each town, the residents of each town and I would like to extend our gratitude for all who made this possible and for all of the work accomplished.
