CARIBOU, Maine — The Swedes went 13-1 during the regular season to capture the league championship and then went undefeated in the playoffs to win the Caribou-Presque Isle Co-Ed Softball League title on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

It was the final game to be played on the Teague Park softball field before groundwork begins there on the new RSU 39 school.

The Swedes took on Northern Business Products in the tourney finals. NBP had beaten Progressive Realty and Cameron Construction/Shaw Financial in playoff games held the previous evening.

The Swedes broke out early by scoring the first run of the game in the second inning. Scotty Landeen doubled and Kellie Peers singled him in.

NBP came right back to tie the game in the top of the third as Sue Willette reached on an error and Lee Caron followed with an RBI single.

In the bottom of the inning, the Swedes’ Hollie McDougall reached on an error with Cory Dickinson moving her around to third base on a double. Ashley Doucette grounded out to second to drive in McDougall. The next batter, Josh Doucette, singled to score Dickinson and make it a 3-1 margin.

The Swedes shut down NBP in the top of the fourth and added another run in the bottom of the inning when Chad McCarthy doubled and Peers knocked him in for a 4-1 lead.

NBP scored its second run of the contest in the fifth when Jordan McLaughlin reached on an error and Willett pushed him across, but the Swedes broke the game open in the bottom of the frame when they strung a few hits together.  Dickinson doubled and Ashley Doucette, Josh Doucette, Jordyn Doucette and Landeen followed with singles and their team scored three times to go up by five (7-2).

NBP managed to get two runners on base in the sixth with no outs as Jesse Beaulieu singled and Renee Fournier reached on another Swedes error.  Beaulieu was forced out at third before McLaughlin’s single drove in Fournier for the final run of the game.

Both teams went down quietly in the ensuing half innings to lead to the 7-3 final.
