High school golf season underway

The Ashland and Central Aroostook golf teams squared off against each other twice in a three-day period last week, but the results were the same. The Carlisle team, made up of players from both Caribou and Presque Isle, also launched its season last Friday with a home match against Old Town. 

The Panthers of Central Aroostook swept its matches against Ashland, 11-0, as both teams opened regular season play.

Last Tuesday, Aug. 22, Portage Hills Country Club hosted a high school match for the first time in five years as the sport has been revived in Ashland. Central Aroostook hosted two days later at Mars Hill Country Club.

In the first match, Central Aroostook was led by Shane Stackpole and Tyson Cyr, who each carded 50s on the afternoon. Taia Tilley had the Panthers’ next lowest score with a 57. Graham Berry posted the low round for the Hornets with a 58.

On Thursday, Aug. 24, at Mars Hill, Stackpole led CA with a 50 and Isabelle Wright came in with a 59, while Berry again had Ashland’s best score with a 60.

On Friday, Aug. 25, the Carlisle team lost to the Coyotes of Old Town, 179-191, in medal play scoring at the Presque Isle Country Club.

Dillon Leland of Old Town was the medalist with a 42. Gabe Rand and Isaac Madore each carded 47s and Noah Rosado had a 48 to lead Carlisle. Seth Roy was next with a 49 and Libby Boone had a 54.
