High School golf season winding to a close

The regular season for high school golfers is quickly coming to a close for local squads from Houlton, Hodgdon and Southern Aroostook.

The Penobscot Valley Conference championship takes place Thursday, Sept. 28 for Houlton golfers at the JATO Golf Course in Lincoln.

Houlton has one regular season match left on its schedule traveling to Calais Saturday for a noon contest. Both Southern Aroostook and Hodgdon completed their regular seasons Monday as the two clubs participated in the Aroostook County Golf Meet in Mars Hill.

By finishing second in that meet, Hodgdon qualified for the state team championships Oct. 7.

Houlton improved to 13-2 Monday as the Shires hosted Carlisle and Calais at the Houlton Country Club’s par 36 course. Houlton shot a 167 to easily best Carlisle (184) and Calais (256).

Carlisle, a combined squad from Presque Isle and Caribou, is 8-8 on the season, while Calais is 2-12.

Houlton’s Drew Marino was the medalist on the day as he shot a low round of 38. Other Houlton golfers were: Wyatt Harvey 39, Isaac Vega 42, Nick Brewer 48, Devin Ivey 49, Carson Grant 55, Sydney Lorom 60 and Rhetta Vega 66.

Scoring for Carlisle were: Gabe Rand 44, Noah Rosado 45, Seth Roy 48, Libby Boone 47, Isaac Madore 51, Andrew Evens 55 and Chandler Tracy 62.

Scoring for Calais were Shane Delmonaco 55, Dylan Karasedowicz 63, Natsuki Fukui, 67 and Joss Davenport 71.

Houlton 164, John Bapst 190 — At the Pine Hill Golf Course (Par 36) in Brewer Friday, Houlton improved to 11-1 on the year as the Shires easily bested John Bapst. Drew Marino was medalist on the day as he shot a two-under par 34.

Other scorers for Houlton were Wyatt Harvey, 40; Nick Brewer, 45; Isaac Vega, 45; Carson Grant, 45; Devin Ivey, 49; Sydney Lorom, 60; and Rhetta Vega, 64.

For John Bapst, Jerry Hung and Cannon Breen  both shot a 47, followed by Nate Mushlit, 48; Sam Yoo, 48; David Fernandez, 55; Crystal Bell, 54; Cameron Ashe, 54; and Dominique Needham, 54.

Hodgdon golf 6, Ashland 5 — At Portage Hills Country Club Thursday, Hodgdon defeated Ashland in match play. Andrew Tuttle of the Hawks was the medalist with a round of 50 as Hodgdon edged the Hornets in the final tune-up before Monday’s Aroostook League championships in Mars Hill.

Tristan Pelletier shot a 61 to lead Ashland.

Houlton 173, Carlisle 182, John Bapst 217 — The Houlton golf team got back to its winning form last Wednesday in a match with Carlisle and John Bapst.

Played at the Presque Isle Country Club, Houlton picked up the nine-stroke victory over Carlisle (Caribou-Presque Isle) as the Shires fired a 173 on the day, compared to a 182 for the hosts. John Bapst finished with a 217.

Houlton’s Drew Marino was medalist on the day as he shot 38 over nine holes.

Other Shire results were: Wyatt Harvey 41; Isaac Vega 46; Nick Brewer 48; Devin Ivey 49;  Sydney Lorom 53; Rhetta Vega 60; and Carson Grant 62.

Results for Carlisle golfers were: Seth Roy 41; Gabe Rand 45; Libby Boone 46; Noah Rosado 50; Isaac Madore 53; Andrew Evans 54; and Alex Cyr 59. Scoring for John Bapst were: Jerry Hung 48; Cameron Breen 52; David Fernandez 58; Sam Yoo 59; Cameron Ashe 62; Nate Mushlit 66; and Crystal Bell 67.

Central Aroostook 8, Hodgdon 3 — Central Aroostook picked up the victory over Hodgdon Wednesday behind Shane Stackpole, who was the medalist with a 44. Tyson Cyr had a 51, Stetson Nicholas came in with a 53 and Taia Tilley carded a 63 for the victorious Panthers.

Results for Hodgdon: Justin Wilson 50, Bryan Barton 53, Andrew Tuttle 54; and Nathan Tuttle 67.

Ashland 5, Southern Aroostook 4 — Ashland nipped Southern Aroostook, 5-4, for its first victory of the season Sept. 13. Hunter Walker of SA was the medalist with a 54 and Graham Berry finished with a 61 for the Hornets.
