Island Falls News (week of October 18, 2017)

The building formerly known as Nick Webb’s  grocery store is now featuring home baked goods made by the daughters of Mr. and Mrs Stephen McLean. The couple are  formerly of Winslow but now live in Island. Falls. The daughters, Hannah and Elizabeth, are accomplished chefs and have a background of restaurant work and catering. The store also features arts and crafts brought in by local people, homemade scones, muffins, cookies, many different pies and different types of homemade bread.

The McLeans also had a garden and many of their veggies were on sale this fall, along with all the wonderful home-made goodies. The store is open 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. five days a week, so come on in and enjoy.

Dean and Jane Fitzgerald have closed their camp on Pleasant Pond for the winter and have returned to their home in Millinocket. While here this summer they had a great time visiting with family and neighbors who live in the area, fishing and swimming in the pool at Vacationland Estates.

I have had the fun of sitting in my living room and watching the deer who have, at last, come out of the woods and are now grazing  all over my large back yard. I haven’t seen any for months and since the rain, the grass is greener and they sure seem to enjoy it. I had seven of them one morning quite early, about 6:30 a.m. and they stayed quite awhile.

I still have the one little chipmunk who is faithful in coming in for his supper every afternoon. There have been no squirrels around yet to drive him off. I still don’t have any birds, but I did see a couple of chickadees one day. The birds have been few and far between this fall.
