UC at Houlton announces new graduate opportunity in leadership studies

HOULTON, Maine — Beginning in January 2018, University College at Houlton will host the Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies from the University of Southern Maine.

This certificate is intended for those with a completed bachelor’s degree as well as professionals from the non-profit and civic sectors who wish to enhance their leadership skills outside of a full graduate program. Students will gain advanced knowledge in leadership theory and research and the skill sets required to work effectively.

Emphasis is placed on self-awareness as a leader, reflective professional practice, and social responsibility. The focus will be on specific skills including complex problem solving, managing conflict, communicating effectively and building relationships.

There are four courses in the sequence for the full certificate: Foundations of Leadership Studies I; Foundation of Leadership Studies II; Communication and Relationship Building; and The Conflict Process.

The first course in this sequence will begin Jan. 22 and meet from 4-6:45 p.m. at the Houlton Higher Education Center. The application process includes submitting a USM online graduate certificate admission application (https://www.applyweb.com/usmaine/) with a $25 fee, forwarding all undergraduate transcripts, plus a current resume and a personal statement. There are no graduate entrance examinations required.

According to a recent graduate of the program, “This certificate allowed me to obtain an advanced education with a focus on the skills that best fit my areas of interest, and to tailor my studies to my professional life.”

There will be an information session on the Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies at UC Houlton/HHEC, 18 Military Street on Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. A program overview will be provided. All interested students are invited to attend. Pre-registration is encouraged though not required with University College at Houlton at 521-3100.
