Mars Hill Legion to honor veterans

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the American Legion Post 118 in Mars Hill will hold their third annual Veterans Appreciation Supper from 4 to 8 p.m.

All are welcome to attend this free event to show your support for all veterans and their families.

Bottle Drive

The Central Aroostook High School Spanish Club is raising funds for a trip to Ecuador in April 2018.  They are collecting cans and bottles to raise funds.

To donate, take your items to the Mars Hill Redemption Center and designate the funds for the Spanish Club or call the school at 425-2811.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met Tuesday morning, Oct. 31, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center.  The guest speaker was Delores Landry, executive director of Sarah’s House in Holden Maine.

The house opened for guests on Oct. 1, 2014.  In the first year of operation, they were able to provide housing for more than 80 guests as they received treatments at the Lafayette Cancer Center at Eastern Maine.  Their guests traveled from 11 of Maine’s 16 counties.

There are nine individual guest rooms, as well as a kitchen, laundry facilities, dining area and lounge space.  The shared spaces provide opportunities for patients to share a meal, time together and experiences.

While a suggested donation for a night’s lodging is $15, that can be discussed with House staff if it is a financial hardship.  There is an ongoing effort to raise another $700,000 to ensure the House will continue to serve cancer patients will into the future.

For more information, or to contribute to the house, call 207-989-1683 or email Sarahshousemanager@gmail.com.  Their website is www.Sarahshouseofmaine.org.

Operation Christmas Child

The challenge is out to the Central Aroostook area to join in the effort to fill 1,000 boxes to send out this year for Operation Christmas Child.  Folks are invited to help by either filling a box, buying things to go into boxes or by donating funds to help with the shipping costs of $9 per box, which is the first increase in a number of years.  To see a list of suggested items, go to www.samaritanspurse.org/occ.

The drop-off location for this year is 24 Military Road (Route 1) in Blaine, the former Faith Baptist Chapel.  Dates and times are Nov. 13-18, 8-10 a.m. and 6-8 p.m.; Nov. 19, 12-2 p.m.; and Nov. 20, 6-8 a.m.

For more information, or to donate items please contact Ami Pierce at 227-2017 or Erica McCrum at 227-7678.
