Owls defeat Clippers

MACHIAS, Maine — The University of Maine at Presque Isle men snapped a three-game losing streak and beat UM-Machias for the second time this season on Thursday.

The Owls went on the road and used a strong surge in the late stages of the opening half en route to a 75-58 victory.

After nine lead changes, the score was tied at 24 before the visiting Owls went on a 14-4 run beginning at the 9:20 mark of the first half. Three-point field goals by Deandre Duncombe and Anthony Chacho fueled the run, which included six free throws, and UMPI led 38-28 at intermission.

UMPI’s lead grew to as many as 26 points as the visitors dominated play in the second half.

Wilburn Griffiths poured in a season-high 20 points on 9-for-14 shooting from the field. He also grabbed six rebounds for UMPI. Kevin Collins scored 13 points, Duncombe 12 and Chacho 10 for the Owls, while Maurice Harris had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Thomas Papagionopolis scored 18 points and Travonne Thompson notched 12 to go along with 13 rebounds for UMM.

The two teams had met Nov. 18 at a tourney hosted by Thomas College in Waterville, with UMPI also prevailing, 85-71.

The Owls are now 3-3 heading into a Dec. 5 game at Orono against Div. I University of Maine. The Clippers’ record dropped to 3-5.
