100 Years Ago – Dec. 5, 1917
Many compliments — Mrs. L. H. Brockway, drawing teacher in the Houlton schools, is receiving many compliments this week for having painted an original Thanksgiving scene which serves as a background in the Dunn Furniture Co’s. large window.
Showing kindness — Through the kindness of Houlton Lodge BPOE, 120 children of the town, who might have otherwise had an ordinary dinner, feasted on turkey and all the good things that go with it at the Elks’ home on Thursday noon.
75 Years Ago – Nov. 26, 1942
Health Officer — Dr. J. R. Webber was named health officer for the town of Houlton by the Council at its meeting held Monday night. He will finish out the unexpired term of Dr. Eugene Gormley, who recently entered the medical corps of the United States Army.
Special bond drive — Women at War Week is being observed in Houlton by a special drive to sell War Bonds and Stamps. In conjunction with this national observance, Aroostook County is launching a drive to purchase a bomber which will be called ‘The Aroostook.’ Every bond and stamp sold in Aroostook County during this period will be applied on the bomber. The best bomber costs over $300,000. Aroostook has so far given only the best to the world — best of men, women and children, best of potatoes — now we shall be satisfied with giving only the best of bombers.
50 Years Ago – Dec. 6, 1967
Celebrating birthday — Mrs. George Hutchinson Sr. celebrated her 90th birthday Saturday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Hutchinson, with whom she resides. She is the mother of nine children, of whom eight are still living. She still enjoys life and is very much alert.
Biggest beet — The First National Bank of Houlton has announced the winners of the contest for the largest sugar beet grown in 1967 submitted to the office here. The first place winner who will receive $25. Is Wilfred Donovan of Houlton. Second place goes to Harvey Long of Houlton and the third place winner is Irving Thurston of Fryeburg. The winning beet weighed eight pounds, eight ounces.
25 Years Ago – Dec. 2, 1992
Celebrates anniversary — On Sept. 28, Adelbert and Clara Maxell of Houlton noted their 65th wedding anniversary. A small celebration was held on Saturday Oct. 3, at their home. They were joined by their son, Robert Maxell and his wife Betty of Machias. Also in attendance were Mrs. Glennis Hannan and Mrs. Gertrude Henderson of Houlton and John and Alison Maxell of Smithfield, R.I.
Annual food drive — When the Cub Scouts of Packs 202 and 205 and the Boy Scouts of Troop 205 finally tallied the number of items they had collected in their ‘Scouting for Food’ program, they had 1,446 items to donate to the Agape Food Pantry, a local outreach program to assist families in the Oakland, Patten, Island Falls and Sherman areas.
