During their first meeting of the new year on Wednesday, the Presque Isle city councilors voted to appoint Doug Cyr, manager of Leisure Gardens and Leisure Village in Presque Isle, to fill a councilor seat that had been vacated by Natalee Graves.

In December Graves, who was elected in fall 2015, announced her resignation from the City Council due to time that she will spend in other parts of the state to complete clinical experiences toward her physical therapy degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Cyr will take the oath of office during the next City Council meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 7.  He will remain in the seat until the next general election in November, when anyone will be able to run for the final year of Graves’ term.

In other business, the councilors voted to keep Emily Smith in her position as chair of the City Council and Mike Chasse as deputy chair, both for one-year terms.  The chair presides at Council meetings, represents the city in intergovernmental relationships and appoints the members of the advisory boards and commissions, with the advice and consent of the Council.  The deputy chair acts as chair during the absence or disability of the chair.

The councilors also re-appointed Tom King as city clerk, Brent York as city attorney, George Howe as code enforcement officer and Vince Baldwin as deputy code enforcement officer.
