HOWLAND, Maine — The Houlton girls basketball team continued its march through the Class C competition Monday evening as the Shires traveled to Penobscot Valley High School to face Dexter in the Penobscot Valley Conference championship.

Houlton (18-0 during the regular season) easily beat a depleted Dexter squad 42-13 for the league title. The league championship pits the top two PVC teams in Class C.

The Shires last won the PVC championship back in 2015, when Houlton last competed in Class C. Houlton beat Piscatquis Community High School 51-35 in that game and went on to win the state Class C championship for the second straight year.

Kolleen Bouchard led the Shires with 25 points and nine rebounds, while Aspen Flewelling added eight points. Avery Herrick paced Dexter with 13 points. The Tigers’ top player, Peyton Grant, sat out the game due to a leg injury.

The Houlton girls now have a lengthy layoff until their first postseason game, Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 8:35 p.m. in Bangor. To keep the team fresh, the Shires will host Woodland at 5 p.m. Thursday in a scrimmage.
