Washburn Scouts welcome new member, attend service

The night of Feb. 3 was hailed as an instant growth for Washburn’s Boy Scout Troop 177, as Damien DuMont crossed over from Cub Scout Pack 177 to Troop 177 during the annual Cub Scout Pack Blue and Gold Banquet.

DuMont received his Arrow Of Light award from the Cub Scouts for completing all requirements during his Webelo two year and was recognized by the Pack Scouts and leaders as well as his parents, Paul and Diane DuMont.

Following the Arrow of Light Ceremony, DuMont crossed over the bridge and was welcomed by Scouts and Leaders of Boy Scout Troop 177. He received the troop neckerchief and slide, troop epaulettes, troop numeral patch, Eagle patrol patch and troop hat.

Scoutmaster Larry Harrison presented him with his official Boy Scout Handbook, and explained, “The handbook is like your parents’ car keys — without them you will not be able to continue your journey. Everything you need for your advancement and skill building is inside of this handbook.”

Harrison, along with Troop 177 Scouts and leaders, welcomed the new Scout into the troop.

Scout Sunday service

On Sunday, Feb. 4, Scouts and leaders from Boy Scout Troop 177 and Pack 177 attended the Crouseville Advent Christian Church for Scout Sunday services, part of Scout Week activities.

Scouts were welcomed by Pastor John Walsh, who offered an inspirational sermon. The Scouts presented the colors and led the pledge of allegiance, handed out bulletins and took the offering.

During the service Scoutmaster Larry Harrison thanked the congregation for so graciously receiving the troop at this annual event. Scouts Damien Dumont and Paul Tardie III presented special readings during the service that included the Scout Law Prayer, Camper’s Prayer and the Prayer for the Boy Scouts.

A highlight of the service was when Pastor John asked for any Eagle Scouts in the congregation to be recognized, and 93-year-old Andy Plutou remarked that he received his Eagle award in the 1930s in Connecticut. He is the father of Andrea Pesut of Crouseville.

The congregation also recognized Eagle Scout Lee Phelps, a member of the church.

Scouts and Leaders in attendance were Scoutmaster Larry Harrison; Boy Scouts Paul Tardie III, Ryan Cole, Patrick Tardie II, Christopher Tardie, Joey West and Damien DuMont; and Cub Scouts Isaac Sines, Grant Caron and Isaiah DuMont.
