Local author offers summer workshops

CARIBOU, Maine — Author Wendy L. Koenig, a New Brunswick resident, will present a three-part workshop series for writers this spring and summer.

The first workshop, titled “Character Building,” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 16, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Caribou Public Library. Participants will discuss building a character and creating dialogue and action consistent with that character.

The second workshop, “Writing a Scene,” will take place June 19, also from 5 to 6:30 p.m. A character is not much good without something to do, and Ms. Koenig’s talk will revolve around plots and subplots, writing action, character in a scene and more.

The third workshop is titled “Editing the Draft,” and will cover things like structure, word choice, things that don’t belong and micro-scenes.

Koenig belongs to the Breathe, a small group of writers who meet at the Caribou Public Library every Tuesday evening. Breathe was established in 2007 and hosts local members from Presque Isle, Stockholm and Caribou, as well as Grand Falls, New Brunswick.

We are a community of beginners, advanced writers, published authors, and everything in between,” Koenig said. “We write love poems, diatribes, thrillers, science fiction, murder mysteries, fantasy, rural poems, romances and more.”

Along with Koenig, two other participating members of Breathe have been published: Lloyd Archer and Larry Bubar, a self-published author of children’s books.
