JOHN H. CHADWICK, AUGUSTA – John H. Chadwick, age 98, passed away peacefully, Monday, April 23, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born in Houlton, ME on May 31, 1919, the son of Harold L. Chadwick and Nell M. (Johnston) Chadwick.
John was a graduate of Ricker Academy and the University of Maine, the class of 1943, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Horticulture. John served honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II (Pacific) and the Korean War. He was also Commander of the Naval Reserve in Augusta. He retired as a Lt. Commander after 26 1/2 years of service. While in the service, he was stationed in Bermuda where he met his wife, Thelma G. Reed, and they were married there on April 1, 1946. After marrying, they moved to Houlton to run the family business, Chadwick Florist, which his father started in 1908.
Prior to his retirement, John was employed by the State of Maine in the Forest Service Department as an entomologist for 30 years. Some of the projects he worked on were Dutch elm disease, the gypsy moth infestation, and the spruce budworm outbreak.
John was a communicant of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church of Augusta, including time as a member of the vestry. He served on the Augusta School Board for 17 years, the Salvation Army Advisory Board for 10 years, and was a member of the Kennebec Valley Alumni Chapter of the University of Maine.
John looked forward each summer to going to his camp on East Grand Lake in Weston, where he spent time fishing, puttering, and enjoying his family. He also enjoyed golf and woodworking.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Thelma R. Chadwick, a granddaughter, Jennifer Keliher-Paquette; his sisters, Carolyn G. McVicker, Patricia C. Erickson, and a brother, James M. Chadwick.
Surviving are two daughters, Gwyneth C. Quimby and her husband Darrel of Augusta, and Meredith N. Chadwick of Mashpee, Ma.; seven grandchildren: Justin, Myriah, Rory, Megan, Molly, John, and Albie; seven great-grandchildren: Addisyn, Kiley, Dharma, Phoibe, Max, Charisma, and Kevin. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thanks to all his caregivers who cared for him over the past two years, and from John, “thank you”.
There will be no public visiting hours. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 5, at 2 p.m. at the Emmanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church, 209 Eastern Avenue, Augusta, ME. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton, ME at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice in his memory.
