Island Falls notes (week of May 23, 2018)

Still not very much going on here.  The Island Falls Brick Garage Ice Cream opened on May 11, but only for the weekends for now with hours Fridays 3 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturdays 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Brick Garage Ice Cream will be open for the season on Memorial Day and will be serving the ice cream from Houlton Farms Dairy, plus soft serve, on a daily basis. It will be real cool and taste sweet on a hot summer day.

Tom Hawkes, son, Chris and friend, Beth, were recent visitors here in Island Falls and while here they did spring chores for me. The big one being preparing the lawn mower for the summer. We all went to Sherman for lunch at Brenda’s, which was very good. Tom, Chris and Beth then left for their homes in Glenburn.

I have seen the male cardinal at my feeders the past few days but have yet to see the female. Some new ones to the feeders have been a red-breasted grosbeak and a pair of hummingbirds. We still have lots of finch and swallows too, and between all of them it takes a lot of seed to fill them up.

There have been several deer coming to the back lawn recently as we finally had some rain fall and new growth has popped up — including the dandelions — which are now showing their yellow blossoms. I’ve had my first taste of new fiddleheads and they were delicious. Soon it will be time to get the lawn mower out. The ice has been out of Mattawamkeag Lake for about two weeks  and before you know it the dreaded blackflies will be with us.
