STACYVILLE, Maine — State police have arrested a Sherman man and charged him with burglary and theft in connection with a camp break-in earlier this month.
During the arrest, police said they also uncovered evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing and found an old mortar round that needed to be handled by a bomb squad.
Following an investigation, Trooper Tim Saucier determined that 52-year-old Andrew Allen of Sherman committed a camp burglary reported May 12 on the Silver Ridge Road in Sherman, according to a press release issued Friday by Sgt. Josh Haines of the Maine State Police.
Some of the property was recovered as part of the investigation, but Saucier was not immediately able to locate Allen, according to Haines.
At about 10:30 on May 20, however, Trooper Scott Duff stopped three males in a 2002 Volkswagen Passat while he was on routine patrol on Route 11 in Stacyville. When Duff realized that Allen was one of the men, the trooper arrested him in connection with the camp burglary.
During the traffic stop, the trooper also observed evidence of drug use and manufacturing, according to Haines.
After Duff consulted with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, police towed the car to the state police barracks in Houlton and obtained a search warrant.
In searching the car, MDEA agents gathered evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing and also found an old military mortar round, according to the press release.
The state police bomb team was called in to remove and dispose of the round, Haines reported.
While the investigation continues, state police are asking for anyone with information related to the burglary, specifically anyone who recently bought any property from Allen to contact Saucier at 532-5400.
Haines said that charges will not be filed against anyone returning property bought from the suspect.
