NEW SWEDEN, Maine – Shirley was born in Attleboro, MA on Dec. 20th, 1928, the daughter of Charles William Mendler and Caroline Frances Fromm Mendler. Shirley died May 3, 2018, at 89 years old.
Shirley married Paul Surprenant in 1949. They had four children, Herman, Lynn, Paul and Judy, and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband and two sons. She was a homemaker, avid gardener and longtime volunteer.
Shirley and Paul purchased a historic Swedish log homestead in New Sweden int he 70s and later restored it. There she enjoyed expansive gardens and an amazing array of beautiful flowers and walks in the woods. Many thanks to all her wonderful neighbors and friends and the Aroostook Area Agency on Aging for making it possible for her to stay in her and Paul’s beloved home until her untimely passing.
No formal funeral arrangements are planned.
