Miracle Mile road race draws more than 200 to downtown Houlton

HOULTON, Maine — This sixth running of the LP Miracle Mile once again proved to be a tremendous draw with more than 200 runners and walkers taking part.

The race was created in memory of Makenna Ward, the daughter of Kirk and Amy Ward of Houlton who lost her battle to cancer at the age of 6 back in 2013. Proceeds from the race are used to bring awareness and raise funding for Childhood Cancer and Diamond Blackfan Anemia.

“My reason for this event and inspiration is not only my own daughter’s fight with cancer, but the thousands of kids who are diagnosed yearly,” Kirk Ward stated on the event page. “The LP Miracle Mile will also benefit Diamond Blackfan Anemia, a rare blood disorder in which the bone marrow fails to make red blood cells.”

Funds raised by the LP Miracle Mile will go to benefit two specific organizations —  CureSearch, an organization dedicated to research and awareness of pediatric cancer, and the Diamond Blackfan Anemia Foundation, which provides similar research and awareness support for that illness.

Last year, the event had its highest participation ever with 250 runners and walkers. Over the past six years, it has helped raise more than  $22,000 since its inception.

Evan Desmond was the overall race winner, completing the 1-mile course in 4 minutes, 31 seconds.
