Strong thunderstorm alert for Friday, July 27, 2018

CARIBOU, Maine — The National Weather Service office in Caribou has issued an alert that at 4:31 p.m., a strong thunderstorm was located 8 miles south of Oxbow, or 21 miles north of Patten, moving northeast at 30 mph.

Winds in excess of 40 mph and pea-size hail are possible with this storm.

Locations impacted include Presque Isle, Mapleton, Ashland, Bridgewater, Smyrna, Masardis, Mount Chase, Oxbow, Dudley Township, Smyrna Mills, Scopan, Littleton, Monticello, Oakfield, Blaine, Westfield, Chapman, Castle Hill, Ludlow and Merrill.

This includes the following highways: Interstate 95 near mile maker 285, US Highway 1 between Monticello and Mars Hilland State Highway 11 between Knowles Corner and Squapan.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
