The Ensign Animal Fountain is pictured at the entrance to Market Square in Houlton on July 4, 1919. The fountain was a gift from the National Humane Alliance and stands as a symbol of the animal welfare movement of the late 19th- early 20th century. There are three located in the state, in Houlton, Portland and Vinalhaven. (AROOSTOOK HISTORICAL and ART MUSEUM)
