Maynard L. McEwen II

BRIDGEWATER and PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – Maynard L. McEwen II, 60, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 21, 2018, at a Mars Hill Healthcare Facility. Maynard was born in Bangor on February 25, 1958, the son of Maynard “Bud” and Jane (Sargent) McEwen.
He grew up in Presque Isle with fond memories of spending summer weekends at Birch Haven Campground boating. He graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1976. Christmas was his favorite time of year insisting on real trees and tons of outdoor lights. Being close in age with his brother, Randy, they shared many of the same friends who remembered him well on Facebook.
Maynard was a true creative spirit and was well known for his passions for automobiles, painting, and wood working. With his love for all things automobile, Maynard could tell the make, model, and year of just about every vehicle ever built, specializing in antiques autos. He loved to detail cars, dabble in auto body repair, watch NASCAR, and build model cars being meticulous with paint and details. His painting was first recognized at the age of 10 years old when he painted his “masterpiece” abstract vase of flowers that proudly hangs in his sister Carol’s home today. This passion evolved to a love for painting homes both inside and out and was known for his artistic eye and steady hand. Woodworking and furniture refinishing was a talent he inherited from his Grandfather Sargent. Maynard could either build furniture from scratch or refinish antique pieces, restoring them to better than original beauty. No matter the passion, his dedication to craftsmanship and perfectionism was impressive by all standards.
Maynard was the fifth generation to live in the Sargent family home in Bridgewater, until failing health forced him to move. “Buddy,” as he was known to his family, lost his long arduous battle with COPD on a beautiful clear blue, fall morning with his sister Trudy by his side, holding his hand. The family sincerely wishes to thank everyone that helped care for Maynard in his final years.
In addition to his devoted parents, Maynard is survived by his siblings, Randal “Randy” and his wife, Mary McEwen of Carmel, Trudy McEwen of Mars Hill and her fiancé, Dan Cyr, Carol and her husband, James “Jamie” McCleary of Presque Isle; his nephews, John McEwen of Milford, Cyle McCleary of Presque Isle and Nebraska, Agis Clark of Mars Hill; and his niece, Cayla McCleary of Presque Isle, who shares his love for art. He is also survived by his uncle, Phillip Sargent of Presque Isle; his aunt, Jane (Rowe) McEwen of Westbrook; and many cousins.
A private graveside burial will be held at Smith Cemetery in Bridgewater, on November 3. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.duncan-graves.com.
