CARIBOU, Maine — U.S. Senator Angus King today [Nov. 3] visited with small business owners and community members in downtown Caribou to learn about local strategies to bolster the economy and to discuss ways to strengthen the workforce and support job growth throughout rural Maine. Senator King’s visit in Caribou is part of his statewide effort to Get Out the Vote to ensure that Maine people are excited about exercising their right to vote on Election Day.
“In Caribou, the close-knit community, beautiful scenery, and access to the outdoors are wonderful reasons to live here and raise a family. That’s why we need to continue to build a strong economy – so Maine people can get good jobs and work where they want to live,” said Senator King. “It was great to meet with small business owners and dedicated community members this morning to talk about ways we can work together to support the economy in Caribou and throughout Aroostook County. It is their local leadership and on-the-ground-knowledge that helps guide my work in Washington.”
A former small business owner, Senator King knows firsthand how Maine small businesses can stimulate the economy and provide good jobs for people across the state. He has continually advocated for Maine small businesses – finding new ways to grow the workforce, fostering innovation in rural Maine, and pushing for broadband expansion so people can have the flexibility to live and work where they please.
Senator King has focused much of his time on the revitalization of Maine’s rural economy, and outlined strategies to modernize and expand Maine’s workforce in the economic agenda he introduced in April 2017. He has continually fought for Maine’s traditional industries like farming in Aroostook County and helped secure a number of provisions in the Senate version of the Farm Bill to support innovation and create new opportunities for Maine’s agricultural industry, and has worked to bring more young people into farming so the next generation can succeed.
