A different kind of school bus

Prior to 1931, before Route 1 between Houlton and Presque Isle was plowed during the winters, children would hop on horse-drawn “school buses,” which included benches and a wood stove. Main Street in Presque Isle during those days was “rolled” instead of plowed, making these “buses” the ultimate ways for children to arrive at school on time.
