115 Years Ago – Feb. 5, 1904
Resigned position — Miss Rose Donovan, for several years a stenographer in the law office of Madigan & Madigan, has resigned her position there. Miss Donovan has fitted up a studio in the Sincock block where she will receive pupils for instruction on the piano or pipe organ. Miss Donovan is a musician of excellent ability and will doubtless prove very successful in her new work.
100 Years Ago – Feb. 5, 1919
Candidates — In addition to the candidacy announcement last week for Judge of the Municipal Court to succeed Chas. Carroll, it is reported that Harry M. Briggs, Esq., and Herschel Shaw, Esq., are also candidates.
Making a move— Gavriel Bros. of Fort Fairfield, who purchased the Davis Mill on Franklin Street and have been conducting same, have closed down and will move the machinery to Fort Fairfield.
75 Years Ago – Feb. 10, 1944
Success — The third anniversary of the Houlton USO was celebrated during the weekend of Feb. 4, 5 and 6. The occasion was formally opened in the club rooms at a delicious luncheon prepared by Mrs. Fred Mitchell, George Hall, chairman of the local Defense Recreation Council, presided at the affair. Several hundred attended and the weekend was considered a success.
Wedding anniversary — The 44th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Lyman Webb of Ludlow was observed Monday evening when they were entertained at the Moose Brook Club House by 60 of their friends and neighbors. The party was arranged by Mrs. Dwight Webb and Mrs. Donald Webb, assisted by Mrs. Frank Jordan.
50 Years Ago – Feb. 5, 1969
Heaviest storm of the season — About 14 inches of snow fell in Houlton in a 14-hour period in the heaviest storm of the winter. Reports from the Federal Aviation Administration at the Houlton International Airport confirm in fact that is attested to by numerous motorists who tried in vain to shovel their way out of their driveways.
Receives check — Mrs. Diana Paradis was declared a $100 winner last week in First National Stores Deck O’Money contest. Mrs. Paradis was presented her check by Steve Hall, manager of the local First National Store at the Houlton Shopping Center.
25 Years Ago – Feb. 9, 1994
Earns her stripes — Aroostook County Sheriff Edgar Wheeler presented sergeant’s stripes to Patricia Collins of North Amity, following Collins’s promotion last week from deputy to sergeant. She is the first woman in the history of the County Sheriff’s Department to attain the rank.
Raising funds — Maine’s credit unions are perhaps best known for providing affordable financial services to their half million members across the state. Increasingly, though, they are becoming known for their efforts to end chronic, persistent hunger in Maine through the annual Credit Union Campaign for Ending Hunger, which raised $83,000 in this, the campaign’s fourth year. Seventy Maine credit unions, including the Houlton Federal Credit Union, joined their state trade association, the Maine Credit Union League & Affiliates of Westbrook, to shatter the campaigns 1992 fundraising record of $63,000.
