VAN BUREN, Maine — Julia Berube of Van Buren, a senior at Van Buren District Secondary School, has been selected to receive the 2019 Principal’s Award, announced Principal Karen DuBois.
The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals’ Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic achievement and citizenship.
DuBois identified some of the activities she believes make Berube a deserving candidate for this honor.
“Throughout her high school career at Van Buren District Secondary School, Julia has been a role model for her peers and the underclassmen. Demonstrating leadership, Julia has been a class officer during her four years of high school and has held office as a National Honor Society Member,” she said.
“Julia also represents the student body as a member of the District Curriculum Committee,” DuBois continued. “She participates in sports, excels in academics, and finds time to volunteer for the district food pantry.”
Berube, DuBois and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon at Jeff’s Catering on Saturday, April 6.
The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of five $1,000 scholarships in the names of Horace O. McGowan and Richard W. Tyler. McGowan and Tyler were former Maine principals and executive directors of the association.
An additional five $1,000 scholarships will be presented through the efforts of the MPA Scholarship Golf Tournament.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association, which represents Maine’s school administrators.
