Wintergreen to feature local artist Judy Sherman

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Wintergreen Arts Center is featuring the work of local artist Judy Sherman during the month of May.  Her opening reception will be held May 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., during the First Friday Art Walk.

Sherman is a native of Oxbow and still lives in the small settlement, which inspires her artwork.

“The beauty of this little place is astounding—the wild animals, wildflowers, birds and fantastic sunsets,” said Sherman.

Sherman always considered herself a “doodler,” but with the urging of her husband Steven she took art lessons from a local artist during the summer of 1988, and has been hooked ever since.  She works mostly with acrylic medium.

Over the years, Sherman has received many awards for her artwork.  She has also donated many pieces or prints to local fundraisers such as the local Masonic Lodge, Ashland Fish & Game, Veterans’ Cemetery, Elks Club, Rotary, MPBN Great TV Auction, and more.

Sherman also creates illustrations for local authors, including her collaboration on “Bon Homme,” a coming-of-age story by Leonard Hutchins based in the 1920s-era Ashland logging days.

Since 1986, Sherman has owned and operated the Deep In The Woods Gift Shop in Oxbow, and she and her husband also operate a Christmas tree farm.

“Judy is a very gifted and generous artist,” said Dottie Hutchins, Wintergreen’s executive director.  “She has donated her talent for our annual CHAIR-ity Rotary Art Auction, has taught art classes at Wintergreen, and makes the long drive from Oxbow to support many of our First Friday artists.  Her energy matches her artistic gift.”
