HOULTON, Maine — On Friday, May 31, about 300 students filled the Houlton Elementary School cafeteria to honor more than a dozen volunteers from the greater Houlton area who come into the school to interact with the children.

These volunteers, some of whom are Rotarians, give their time and talents to the students in Pre-k, kindergarten, first and second grades throughout the year. Many spend a few hours each day or week to read to individual students or small groups, some assist within the classroom to help with learning centers or by making materials for teachers.

Others contribute by knitting mittens and hats for the winter season. There were volunteers who gave lessons on the importance of saving money to have when it is needed and some assist with special events such as field trips and Spring Fling.

The guests enjoyed a program hosted by Principal Candace Crane with the following students reading poems and thank you cards. Alison Fagnant, Carter Foster, Benjamin Willett, Emerald Toner, Mattie O’Donnell with Haven Hanning, Autumn Schools, Cody Beaulieu, Emmalyn Thibodeau and Elena Lord assisting guests to their seats and serving refreshments.
