New guard building making headway

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Maine Army National Guard’s new Northern Maine Readiness Center is starting to take shape as the building’s metal frames go up this month.

The 43,400-square-foot building at the corner of Edgemont Drive and Central Drive is expected to open in early 2021 to host the Maine Army National Guard’s 185th Engineer Support Company.

The Maine National Guard’s 185th Engineer Support Company includes about 120 members and the new center will serve as a training facility for their work in engineering and building trades provided to the Maine Army National Guard, governments and nonprofits.

Eagle Lake-based Devoe Construction is the contractor on the project, which comes with a cost of $18.5 million. Ground work at the site started last fall.

Designed by Bangor-based WBRC Architects-Engineers, the readiness center will replace a smaller building in Caribou.
