CARIBOU, Maine — The dynasty of the Swedes Coed Softball Team continues as the squad has collected yet another title in the Caribou/Presque Isle Coed League.
The Caribou/Presque Isle Coed League consisted of 10 teams this summer. The regular season was once again competitive, with four teams finishing tied for first place with 10-4 records. The tiebreaker had to be decided by the number of runs the top four teams gave up to one another during the season.
In the championship game held Wednesday, Aug. 14, Swedes beat McNeals’ Trucking/Custom Car Wash 7-4.
Capturing an eighth league championship in the past nine years, the Swedes have dominated league play in recent years. Bub Anderson, player manager for the team, has helped guide the Swedes to an impressive 156-19 record over the past nine years.
According to Matt Bouchard, Caribou’s director of recreation, this year marks Anderson’s final season with the team as he is retiring from the club. Many of the players have been with the team for the past nine years.
“The Swedes played a tough and talented young team in the championship this year,” Bouchard said. “Cory Herbert, team captain of the McNeals’ Trucking/Custom Car Wash, said they had a lot of fun playing in the league and will be back next year.”
Herbert’s squad finished sixth in the regular season, but got on a hot streak in the playoffs to finish as runners up.
The final season standings were: 1, Swedes, 10-4; 2, Cameron Construction, 10-4; 3, National Guard, 10-4; 4, Progressive Realty, 10-4; 5, NBP, 9-5; 6, McNeal’s Trucking/Custom Car Wash, 7-6-1; 7, Thompson Transport, 7-7; 8, MMG, 3-10-1; 9, ABOM, 2-12; and 10, McCain’s, 1-13.
