Sisters show potato-picking prowess at Elks Streetfair

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks held a potato-picking contest for youth in two divisions as part of the Elks’ Crown of Maine Balloonfest Streetfair on Aug. 22.

In the under 16 division, sisters Kealy Britton,12, and Mataya Pinette, 14, daughters of Shane Wilkins and Carla Sawyer, proved their potato-picking prowess, winning first and second places, respectively.

Their younger brother, Eason Britton, won the second-place trophy in the under 10 division.

The winner in the under 10 division was Ben Chartier.  Ben’s younger brothers, Sam, 7, and Micah, 5, combined as a two-person team for the best time in the competition. 

In the potato-picking contest, contestants were presented with a 10-foot row of potatoes totaling 100 pounds.The time each contestant required to pick the 10-foot row of potatoes into a basket to be poured into a barrel until all of the potatoes had been “harvested” was clocked with a stopwatch, with winners being determined on best times.
