PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Aroostook Huskies notched a 74-6 win against the Damariscotta Eagles of Lincoln Academy on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Northern Maine Community College field.
It was the first time the Huskies, a high school football club featuring student athletes from Central Aroostook, Presque Isle, Caribou, Limestone, Van Buren and Washburn, had beaten the Eagles.
“The team is playing exceptional team football,” said Coach Taylor DeFelice. “Everyone is playing their part and it’s got everything to do with our success.”
DeFelice said the game started with a bang as Ilijaha Fortes took the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown.
Defensively, the team was led by Fortes with 10 tackles and Kaden Demerchant with seven. Aiden Hanks, Damien Douglass and Eric Argraves had forced fumbles, with two recoveries from Argraves, two from Rudy Quinonez and one from Hanks. Angel Riopelle returned a punt 60 yards for a touchdown.
“On the offensive side, we were successful on the ground and in the air,” DeFelice said.
Dom Poisson was 7-14 passing with 145 yards, four touchdowns and an interception, also adding five carries for 26 yards and a touchdown. David Hubacher was 2-2 passing with 60 yards and two touchdowns.
Contributions also came from Zaylan Johnston, with four catches for 140 yards and four touchdowns; Connor Rideout, with five catches for 64 yards, two touchdowns and 10 carries for 60 yards on the ground; Aiden Hanks with five carries for 20 yards and one touchdown; and Fortes contributed 10 carries for 175 yards, one touchdown and four 2-point conversions.
The Huskies’ next home game will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19, at NMCC. The local team will face the Gladiators from Berlin, New Hampshire, in a game that will determine who has home field for a potential championship game in November.
