Busy first round for soccer playoffs

Friday was a busy day for soccer playoffs with five local squads hosting playoff games, and several others on the road. The quarterfinals are slated for Tuesday and Wednesday, with semifinal games on tap for Saturday, Nov. 2.

Southern Aroostook 4, Deer Isle Stonington 0 — At Dyer Brook Friday afternoon, the No. 5 Southern Aroostook girls soccer team pulled off the shutout victory over the No. 12 Marriners of Deer Isle-Stonington. Makaelyn Porter booted in three goals, while Aliyah Morales added one for the Warriors. Paige Vose had an assist. Sydney Brewer notched four saves on 11 shots for SA, while Katie Hutchinson had six saves on 29 shots for DIS. The Warriors (10-5 overall) now face No. 4 Schenck/Stearns (12-2) in the Class D North quarterfinals 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Katahdin 4, Shead 0 — At Stacyville Friday afternoon, the No. 6 Cougars (11-3-1) pulled off the shutout victory over No. 11 Shead (10-5) in a girls Class D North prelim. Individual results were not reported. The Cougars now face No. 3 Central Aroostook of Mars Hill (11-3) in the quarterfinals. That game is slated for 4 p.m. Tuesday,  Oct. 29.

Easton 6, Central Aroostook 0 — At Easton Saturday, home field proved advantageous for the Easton boys soccer team as the No. 5 Bears (10-3-2 overall)  shut out No. 12 Southern Aroostook 6-0 in a Class D North prelim. Austin Carver scored three goals to lead the Bears, while Kooper Kinney, Matthew Pangburn, and Camden Michaud each had one goal. Owen Sweeney had two assists and Kinney added one. In goal for the Bears, Kody Carter had eight saves. Jacob Brooks stopped 14 shots for SA. Southern Aroostook finishes its season with a 6-8-1 overall record. The Bears travel to No. 4 Hodgdon 2:30 p.m. Wednesday for a Class D North quarterfinal.
