Vaccines halt communicable diseases

To the editor:

I am writing due to my concern of public opinion of vaccinations.

I provide healthcare to several communities in Aroostook and Washington counties. I see many children as well as adults. In my years of practicing medicine I have experienced the decline and near elimination of several childhood illnesses that were often considered to be life-threatening. The reason for this is the vaccination programs that are in place for public health. Without the public health recommendations and mandates to vaccinate our children, these communicable diseases can return and have devastating effects in our schools and for our children.

The use of vaccines have proven to be very safe and effective. I have never seen a severe or life-threatening reaction to a vaccine in my 20-plus years of practice.

I recommend vaccination to keep our community and children safe. I will vote no on Question 1, March 3, 2020.
