Presque Isle beats Cony over weekend

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Presque Isle beat Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth on Saturday 8-5, in a shootout that Presque Isle dominated from the beginning.

“It was a sloppy game, but a game that we had control of pretty much from start to finish,” Wildcats coach Carl Flynn said.

Though Cony jumped to an early lead, Presque Isle quickly took it back, ending the first period with a 2-1 lead after goals from Connor Demerchant and Gage Letourneau.

The Wildcats expanded that lead in the second period, scoring four more goals, while only allowing one. Presque Isle’s Jonah Roy, Demerchant, Letourneau and Colby Carlisle each had goals. The second period ended with a lopsided score of 6-2 in favor of Presque Isle.

Cony made something of a comeback in the third period, scoring three goals on the Presque Isle defense. But as Brandon Poitras and Gavin Faye scored goals for Presque isle, there was little room for a comeback.

Presque Isle (10-4-1) is currently ranked fourth in the Class B North standings. If the Wildcats remain as the No. 4 seed, it would host a quarterfinal game Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The top performers for the Wildcats were Letourneau, with two goals and three assists and Demerchant, who had two goals and two assists.
