100 Years Ago – Aug. 11, 1920

     New lighting system Manager Belyea, the new owner of Lakewood, the popular resort on Nickerson Lake, has recently purchased a Westinghouse Lighting System, and is having it installed.

With this in operation he will be able to light his buildings and the grounds adjacent. In addition to these, the cottages of Robert A. Palmer and W. P. Mansur will also take light from the above plant.

     Help the inspector J. Frank Guiou, the state automobile inspector, was in town Saturday rounding up a few delinquents for violating the headlight law. 

75 Years Ago – Aug. 9, 1945

     Company purchased The Houlton Ice Cream Company, well known throughout Northern Maine since 1899, this week became associated with H. P. Hood and Sons, according to a joint announcement made today and released by spokesmen of the two companies. H. P. Hood and Son, the home office of which is in Boston, is one of Maine’s oldest dairy companies and plans are now being made to celebrate its hundredth anniversary in 1946.

     50 Years Ago – Aug. 12, 1970

     Retires as Postmaster Eleric Michaud has retired from his position as Postmaster in Island Falls after serving for 34 years in this capacity. Mr. Michaud was the seventh postmaster in this town, having been appointed in 1936. The first postmaster was Levi Sewall, 1863 to 1870, followed by his daughter, Sarah Sewall; then William W. Sewall, George HH. Donham, W. S. Hager and G. A. Young.

     New owners It was announced this week by Mr. and Mrs. Gary Adams, owners of the Northland Hotel, that they have assumed ownership of the hotel beauty salon. The business was formerly known as ‘Mr. Charles Hair Fashions,’ owned by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daly. The new salon will be known as ‘Hotel Coiffures.’

25 Years Ago – Aug. 9, 1995

    Houlton Radiology Wanda Parks and Marilyn Prince, members of the radiology staff at Houlton Regional Hospital, both received certification in the area of mammography.

    Surprise birthday — Mrs. Medston Doyle was surrounded by friends, family, flowers, balloons and a beautiful cake, July 24 for a surprise celebration of her 80th birthday.
