Car crashes into loaded pulp truck in Mapleton

MAPLETON, Maine — No one was seriously injured when a car sideswiped a loaded pulp truck Thursday, but the smaller vehicle was a total loss.

Leroy Shepard, 82, of Mapleton was eastbound on the Mapleton Road in his 1989 Ford Crown Victoria, according to Maine State Police. Behind him was Kevin Thibodeau, 55, of Washburn, driving a 2008 Peterbilt truck. Shepard signaled to turn right onto Carvell Road and Thibodeau moved to pass him.

Police and witnesses said that Shepard suddenly turned left, striking the pulp truck and thereby causing the crash. Minor injuries resulted, police said.

Both men were wearing their seat belts and speed was not a factor in the crash, police said.
