Presque Isle Kiwanis Club cancels annual Halloween festivities

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — This time of the year, the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club would normally be planning its annual Monster Mash, a popular Halloween event for local families.

But the club has opted to cancel this year’s Monster Mash due to logistical challenges of holding the event within COVID-19 prevention guidelines.

Typically, the Monster Mash is held at the Sargent Family Community Center and features a costume contest, dance party in the gym, arts and crafts activities, a cupcake walk and carnival games.

Last year volunteers estimated that 600 people, mainly children and parents, attended the third year of Halloween festivities. Funds raised went toward the Kiwanis Club’s Christmas Project.

“After much discussion, we concluded that there are too many variables concerning the safety of our children,” said LaNiece Sirois, president of the PI Kiwanis Club, about what led to the event cancellation.
