In appreciation of community support

To the editor:

2020 was Houlton’s first-ever 40 Days for Life Fall campaign, part of the 588 cities in 63 countries worldwide.

Our campaign was a huge success, thanks in part to the marvelous support from the greater Houlton community. Our prayerful, peaceful presence at the corner of Burleigh and Military streets from Sept. 23 through Nov. 1 did not go unnoticed. From the onset to the final evening, we were blessed by many of you.

I would like to thank each of you individually but space does not allow it; you will always be remembered.  I’d like to share just a few expressions of your care and support.

Day 1 started out chilly and raining; I was offered an umbrella and given a hot cup of coffee — a blessed way to start the first day. Other memorable moments included a walker  who stopped to share her story of choosing life at a young age; now married 52 years. There was a young man in a pickup who stopped and said “I’ll pray with you,” then bent his knee in prayer. Others faithfully provided hot drinks and treats, as well as warmers for our hands, feet and toes, and a handmade fleece blanket. All donations were greatly appreciated, especially as the weather turned colder.

I particularly enjoyed talking with all the youth who stopped by on their way to and from school.  One young teen’s frequent visits were most refreshing; even presenting us with a beautiful red rosebud bouquet as a thank you for our presence.

These memorable experiences would not have been possible without the exceptional volunteers who faithfully made the sacrifice of time and comfort to stand in prayerful solidarity for the lives of the babies and the well-being of the mothers.  Thank you all. The latest count of babies’ lives spared from abortion during this campaign was 564.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank Chief DeLuca of the Houlton Police Department for his watchful security during the 40-day campaign.
